Jun 23 – Jun 24 all-day
Painting on Glass - 23rd & 24th June 2018 @ Rainbow Glass Studios | England | United Kingdom

This 2 day weekend course is designed for those wanting to learn traditional painting on glass techniques and also be introduced to modern glass paints which give an enhanced colour pallet. The range of colours available to the modern glass artist would have been the envy of glass painters for the last 1000 years who were limited by the glass itself to provide the colour to a window.

• Areas covered : glass cutting, mixing paints & silver stain, traditional painting technique and kiln firing. We will also cover using different mediums such as vinegar, oils and gum arabic and dispensing them using spray gun, calligraphy pen and brushes.

There is a limit of seven people per glass painting workshop enabling individual tuition, please note that we will only run this class once a year.

Price for the weekend includes materials.

Introduction to Cloisonné Enamel- 30th June & 1st July 2018 @ Rainbow Glass Studios
Jun 30 – Jul 1 all-day

A new and exciting weekend course exploring the beautiful technique of cloisonné and enamel on copper and silver.

Together we’ll learn the basic skills required, working on copper with opaque and transparent enamels. On day two we’ll progress to making your own simple design on a fine silver pendant with transparent enamels. This course will add a new decorative technique to your enameling bow!

As we explore more advanced enameling skills we will also learn how to use pliers to shape cloisonné wires, as well as covering wet-laying techniques.

Please note, some previous experience of kiln enameling is essential, so if you haven’t done any before, please book onto the “Enameling on copper for beginners” course first, and then you can progress to this one.

On this weekend course, you will learn to:

Prepare copper and silver prior to enameling
Make test pieces using opaque and transparent enamels with cloisonné wires, silver foils and other media
Cover health and safety and the kiln firing process
Develop simple designs for cloisonné and understand the principles of this technique
Learn to manipulate wire to form copper / silver cloisonné’s
Explore the use of transparent enamels and how to grind, wash and prepare them ready for use
Make a finished small enameled plaque to hang on the wall (to your own design) using cloisonné techniques and opaque enamels by the end of the first day
Design a simple small fine silver pendant with cloisonné wires by the end of the second day.
Receive peer and tutor feedback on your creativity!
A supply of silver-plated jewellery findings will be available on which to mount your sample pieces.

There is a limit of 6 people per workshop enabling faster learning.

Please note: The course takes place in a working glass studio and not a classroom setting, so participants need to be able to stand to prepare enamelled pieces, and to work standing at benches. (Stools are available in between times).

Price = £240 for the weekend, materials included (10:00am – 4:30pm)

Terrarium making Class for Beginners – 7th July 2018 @ Rainbow Glass Studios
Jul 7 all-day

A day-course making your own terrarium using traditional copper-foiling techniques at Rainbow Glass Studios.

Cost: £140.00 including materials, up to three small cacti / succulent plants. Plenteous tea, coffee and biscuits is also provided.

Tutor: Eleanor Watson

An exciting new day course, making your own terrarium in which to grow cacti or succulent plants, ideal for anyone with green-fingered aspirations for tiny garden landscapes!

We will learn to cut and copper-foil glass, building this into a 3D shape, soldering it, adding patina and populating it with small cacti or succulent plants.

What will I make by the end of the day?

A hand-built copper foiled terrarium planted up with a choice of small cacti or succulents.

What will I learn?

• To safely / accurately cut sheet glass to a terrarium pattern

• To “copper foil” to the glass you have cut

• To assemble your copper foiled glass into a 3D desktop terrarium

• To safely use a soldering iron to solder the joins

• To apply a patina to your terrarium

• To create a miniature garden, with soil, sand, gravel and plants

• Information on sourcing other terrarium patterns and materials should you wish to continue your new hobby

Lunch: You are welcome to frequent one of the many lovely cafes on Church Street,  or alternatively please bring your own packed lunch.

Who can come to the course? Is any previous experience needed?

This course is for adults over the age of 16 only due to the use of very hot soldering irons in making copper-foiled glass. No previous experience is needed as you will be taught step by step covering each process involved.

How could I progress my skills after this course?

You could try making more complex shaped terrariums, or learn to make fused glass to incorporate into them. Or you could explore making 2D or 3D shapes using traditional copper foiling techniques such as Tiffany style lamps, mirrors, candle holders or terrarium gardens to hang on the wall.
