Over the last couple of months we’ve been working on a series of glass painted skulls which were then encrusted with Swarovski crystals for a special commission. The process is a little more refined than the usual stained glass window. The individual pieces of hand blown glass were cut to shape using various diamond tools, as using traditional methods don’t allow such shapes to be cut without breakages. The baby skull was then painted using a vitreous paint and fired in a gas kiln. The pieces were then soldered together using the this ‘copper foil’ technique which allows for much thinner lines and is stronger than lead as it is 50% tin. The Swarovski crystals were then placed and fixed using a special UV activated glue. The same was done on the opposite side to mirror the crystal pattern exactly. A lot of work but the result speaks for itself. There are several more to make so I’ll keep you posted on progress.
